Why do I need to log in twice?

Longtime users of this site who are IRE members might be wondering why we're requiring passwords now. In the past, for much of our content, all you needed was your last name and your membership number.

But then again, in the past, our Web site didn't offer as much as it does now.

For the first time, members can now purchase datasets from the Data Library, on demand, 24 hours a day. Because we are an organization of and in the service of investigative journalists, we want to make sure that our data is being purchased for those endeavors. Using passwords -- and assigning data-buying privileges after a human makes sure you are member -- is the only way to do so.

Thanks for your patience and for your interest in IRE.
